« Le terme homophobie (de homo, abrviation de homosexuel et de phobie du radical phobos, crainte) est un nologisme apparu dans les annes 70 pour nommer explicitement les manifestations de mpris, de rejet, voire de haine envers des personnes, des pratiques ou des reprsentations homosexuelles. Pourtant d’un usage courant, cette terminologie a d attendre 1998 pour que les principaux dictionnaires de langue vivante franaise, sous la pression de SOS Homophobie, l’intgrent leur nomenclature.
Dans sa forme la plus aigu, l’homophobie s’exprime par un dchanement de violence, elle est alors synonyme de coup, de blessures, de perscution, de viol, de meurtre. Au quotidien, elle se manifeste par de l’agressivit verbale ( ) Quoi qu’il en soit, l’homophobie suscite des ractions diffrentes chez celles et ceux qui en sont les victimes : au minimum le doute et la tristesse les plongent dans l’amertume ; au mieux, leur rponse est un sursaut de combativit qui les porte affirmer publiquement leur orientation sexuelle, leur mode de vie, leur faon d’aimer ; au pire l’inquitude, l’humiliation, l’angoisse ou l’effroi entachent leur existence. Ne l’oublions jamais : l’homophobie est aussi une cause de dpression et de suicide. A l’instar des autres phnomnes d’hostilit contre un groupe social, c’est dans ces manifestations larves que l’homophobie est la plus difficile combattre : nier ou dprcier l’homosexualit est un sport largement plus convenable qu’un vulgaire passage tabac ( ) L’action militante, par nature, se situe plus volontiers sur le terrain institutionnel et intellectuel. La question de l’ducation est un bon exemple du travail accomplir : entre les croyances populaires et les thories psycho-pdagogiques qui perptuent les rles sexuels d’une part et le contenu htro-centr des cours d’ducation sexuelle et des manuels scolaires que dispense l’cole de la Rpublique de l’autre, chacun a de quoi retrousser ses manches quelle que soit sa sphre de comptence ou d’intrt. In its acutest form, the homophobie is expressed by an outburst of violence, it is then synonymous with blow, wounds, persecution, rape, murder. Never let us forget it: the homophobie is also the cause of depression and suicide. With the instar of the other phenomena of hostility to a social group, it is in these larval demonstrations that the homophobie is most difficult to fight: to deny or depreciate homosexuality is a sport largely more suitable than a vulgar beating up () The militant action, by nature, is more readily on the institutional and intellectual ground. The question of education is a good example of work to be achieved: between the popular beliefs and the psycho-teaching theories which perpetuate the sexual roles on the one hand and the htro-centered contents of the courses of sex education and the textbooks that exemption the school of the Republic of the other, each one has what to roll up its sleeves whatever its sphere of competence or interest.
