Rvl en 1987 par « Le Grand Bleu », Jean-Marc Barr a parcouru depuis un chemin original faisant porter ses choix vers des films d’auteur comme « Le fils Prfr », « Europa » ou « Breakinq The Waves ». D’une actualit dbordante, Jean-Marc sera cet t l’affiche dans quatre films : « Folle d’elle », « Prfrence », « Le Grand Bleu » (en reprise) depuis le 17 juin ; « Mon capitaine » partir du 22 juillet.
Dtendu et souriant, il nous reoit chez lui pour une interview enrichissante dans un cadre intimiste. Nous avons donc dcid de vous la faire partager sur ces quelques pages.
Plusieurs films dans lesquels tu as un rle sortent cet t en France. Manifestement, tu as vcu un changement de rythme certain depuis 10 ans. Comment le gres-tu ?
Quand tu as la possibilit de choisir et que tout coup, comme l’poque du « Grand Bleu, tu deviens trs cher, tu as alors beaucoup moins d’offre puisque les gens qui sont en train de faire des films intressants n’ont pas beaucoup de fric. Donc, pendant 3-4 ans, j’tais un petit peu oblig de suivre une route plus « mainstream » et en faisant a, j’ai pu sortir des films comme « La Peste », « Le Brasier » dont je suis trs fier, plus « Europa » qui est un film pour moi compltement russi. La raison pour laquelle j’ai acclr le rythme, c’tait que tout d’un coup, il me semblait que la meilleure faon d’apprendre, c’tait de prendre des risques et de ne pas se limiter cette autorit qui nous dit qu’il faut qu’on fasse un certain genre de cinma. Je suis venu ici pour chapper cette autorit.
« Prfrence » est sorti le 17 juin. Comment perois-tu ton rle qui semble tout de mme sombre ?
Je n’ai pas encore vu le film mais il est effectivement trs noir. En comparaison avec « Folle d’elle », a ne rentre pas dans le moule du business man. Mais je suis content de l’avoir fait car des personnes m’ont vu dans un rle sombre. Je n’ai pas la possibilit de jouer un rle de hros national. Et c’est notamment la raison pour laquelle j’ai dit non des films comme « Indochine » ou « Cyrano ». Je ne suis pas franais, je suis un mlange, et il y a des acteurs franais qui le mritent plus dans leur ducation.
Il est paradoxal que tu aies accept « Folle d’elle » qu apparat au premier abord comme un flm commercial alors que prcdemment, tu te dirigeais plutt vers des films d’auteur…
Il est vrai qu’au dbut, personne ne voulait parler de « Folle d’Elle » : la raction de Marc tait de repousser les homosexuels quand ils venaient vers lui. On a donc radicalement chang le dialogue pendant qu’on tournait, c’tait la condition que j’imposais. Et mme si ce film est commercial, j’avais une participation dans la cration. De toutes faons, Jrme CORNUAU tait ouvert et il y avait un travail acadmique pour essayer de remplir ce ngatif avec notre esprit et pas avec cette chose qu’ils sont en train de vendre. C’tait un risque.
D’o vient cette enve de t’impliquer dans les scnarios pour briser les tabous ? Par exemple, par rapport l’homosexualit ?
Pour moi, tre homosexuel, c’est comme tre noir ou jaune, c’est une facette. Moi, j’ai envie d’tre transparent. C’est dire, je peux marcher dans la rue, les gens me regardent et me sourient. Ils me comprennent, surtout aprs ce que j’ai fait rcemment. Ils ont compris que nous, les acteurs, nous sommes de la merde. On vit bien mais on ne doit jamais se prendre au srieux. Le seul ct srieux qu’on a partager, c’est quand on est sur le plateau ou sur un cran. Et j’essaye de poursuivre cette ide qui est trs amricaine et post Easy-Rider selon laquelle je ne marche pas sur les autres pieds mais qu’i1s ne marchent pas sur les miens ! J’essaye d’exister comme a. Et avec de tels choix, j’espre casser mon image. Ca te mets dans une position o tu ne peux tre que plus fort aprs.
Pour en revenir « Folle d’elle », considres-tu que c’est ta premire comdie ?
Pour moi, c’est ma premire relle comdie o je pense que je fais sourire les gens pour autre chose que d’tre « cute ». D’ailleurs, les films que je regarde ici tous les soirs sont souvent des comdies romantiques, les Capra, les Walder… Trs rapidement, j’ai commenc ensuite avec Didier Le PECHEUR, j’ai pass un moment sublime pour un film qui est en train de se faire retitrer mais qui s’appelle actuellement « J’aimerais pas crever un Dimanche » et j’ai eu le bonheur de travailler avec des lumires comme Elodie BOUCHEZ dans un film sur la gnration qui a connu le sexe avant et aprs le SIDA. Il raconte le fait, qu’aujourd’hui, on est rellement obsd par le sexe car on est oblig de regarder les autres faire pendant que nous on se branle. C’est une fable onirique qui dbute par une scne o Elodie fait une OD d’ectas dans un club pour se retrouver la morgue. Le personnage que je joue ce moment l est un peu dform car sa relation avec sa femme est termine. Il voit le cadavre de cette jeune fille, il tombe amoureux. Il fait l’amour au cadavre et la fille revient. Et l commence une histoire sur le dsamour. Ce film sortira en automne ou en hiver.
Avec des films abordant une thmatique gay, n’as-tu pas peur de nuire ton image ?
Je n’ai pas d’image. Il y a une majorit de gens qui ne connaissent que « Le Grand Bleu » et il y a une autre petite minorit qui ont eu le plaisir de suivre mon parcours. Avec le temps, les gens me connatront davantage. J’aime mieux tre mystrieux qu’avoir des palmes.
Et ton rle dans mon capitaine ?
D’abord, la possibilit de tourner Rome au Printemps c’est trs beau. Et j’ai beaucoup aim cette mtaphore du mal qui doit tre constant, mal en terme de bon/mal et mle en terme de mle/femelle et cette mtaphore quant l’homosexualit qui est utilise. Le mal/mle doit tre l et il va toujours tre l. C’est un film pour moi qui est assez amricain dans le sens o c’est entre « Platoon » et « La Cage aux Folles » mais crit par un Arthur MILLER post-moraliste. Mon papa est militaire et quand je lui ai tlphon, je lui ai dit : « Oh! Putain papa, je suis dans un uniforme, bret rouge, je suis tuer » et il me demande ce que a raconte, « et bien je joue un capitaine dans l’arme italienne qui la fin du film se fait hara-kiri dons un tribunal parce qu’il a seulement viol un jeune recru. » (silence). Et j’ai vite chang de sujet… (rires). En tous cas, il tait fier.
Et ta rencontre avec Annie Girardot dans « Prfrence » ?
Annie Girardot est un monument pour moi, elle n’a pas besoin de se cacher derrire un masque tir, elle est une me et elle n’a pas peur de le montrer, elle a beaucoup souffert mais c’est un gladiateur.
Quant Ophlie, penses-tu qu’elle aura une longue carrire cinmatographique ?
Ophlie a connu le succs trs jeune et elle ne peut pas poursuivre sa carrire commerciale comme a et esprer une satisfaction car c’est une poursuite futile. C’est une fille intelligente, ambitieuse, gentille et elle a un fond superbe mais elle a des miroirs qui se posent devant elle et quand tu as a tu ne vois plus personne et tu peux te perdre. Mais il y a une chose qui est le noyau de tout, le dsir, et je crois qu’elle ne sait pas encore o se place son dsir. Elle est jeune, elle pourrait prendre deux ans, elle ne serait pas oublie. Elle devrait dcouvrir le monde sans essayer d’impressionner Gala ou Voici. Ca cre une monarchie mdiatique qui parfois influence et peut causer des morts.
Comment te projtes-tu dans l’avenir ?
Je ne sais pas o je vais. Je sais que j’ai une confiance. Je peux peut-tre me dire acteur. Et je suis bien loin des rves de mes 20 ans quand j’avais dcid d’tre acteur. Je suis vraiment en train de vivre un rve. Qu’est-ce que tu peux demander de mieux ? J’ai un lieu et une femme qui m’aime et c’est ce qu’il y a de plus gnial !

Révélé in 1987 by » Great Blue « , Jean-Marc Barr traversed since an original path making carry its choices towards films of author like » the son référé « , » Europa » or » Breakinq The Waves « . Of an overflowing topicality, Jean-Marc will be this summer with the poster in four films: » Insane of it « , » Preference « , » Great Blue » (in recovery) since June 17; » My captain » as from July 22. Slackened and smiling, it receives us at his place for an interview enriching within a framework intimist. We thus decided to make you share it on these
some pages.
Several films in which you have a role come out this summer to France. Obviously, you have lived a change of unquestionable rate/rhythm for 10 years. How do you manage it?
When you have the possibility of choosing and that suddenly, as at the time of the » Great Blue, you become very expensive, you then have much less offer since people who are making interesting films do not have many fric. Thus, during 3-4 years, I was a little bit obliged to follow a road more » mainstream » and by doing that, I could leave films like » the Plague « , » the Blazing inferno » of which I am very proud, plus » Europa » which is a film for me completely successful. The reason for which I accelerated the rate/rhythm, it was that very of a blow, it seemed to to me that the best way of learning, it was to take risks and not to limit themselves to this authority which says to us that it is necessary that a certain kind of cinema is made. I came here to escape this authority.
» Preference » came out the June 17. How do you perceive your role which seems dark all the same?
I did not see film yet but it is indeed very black. In comparison with » Insane of it « , that does not re-enter in the mould of the business man. But I am glad to have made it bus of the people saw me in a dark role. I do not have the possibility of playing a role of national hero. And it is in particular the reason for which I said not to films like » Indo-China » or » Cyrano « . I am not French, I am a mixture, and there are French actors who deserve it more in their education.
It be paradoxical that you have accept » Insane of it » quî appear with first access like a fîlm commercial whereas previously, you you direct rather worm of film of author…
It be true that with beginning, nobody want speak of « Insane of It « : the reaction of Marc was to push back the homosexual ones when they came towards him. The dialogue was thus radically changed while one turned, it was the condition which I imposed. And even if this film is commercial, I had a participation in creation. In any case, Jerome CORNUAU was open and there was an academic work to try to fill this negative with our spirit and not with this thing which they are selling. It was a risk.
From which has this envîe just implied you in the scenarios to break the taboos? For example, compared to homosexuality?
For me, homosexual being, it is like being black or yellow, it is a facet. Me, I want to be transparent. I.e., I can walk in the street, people look at me and smile me. They include/understand me, especially after what I did recently. They understood that we, the actors, we are shit. One saw well but one should never be caught with the serious one. The only serious side that one has to share, it is when one is on the plate or a screen. And I try to continue this idea which is very American and post Easy-To wrinkle according to which I do not walk on the other feet but that i1s does not go on mine! I try to exist like that. And with such choices, I hope to break my image. Ca put to you in a position where you can be only stronger afterwards.
To return from there to » Insane from it « , do you consider that it is your first comedy?
For me, it is my first real comedy where I think that I make smile people for other thing to be » cute « . Moreover, the films which I look at here every evening are often romantic comedies, Capra, Walder… Very quickly, I then began with Didier the PECHEUR, I spent one sublime moment for a film which is being made retitrer but which is currently called » I would not like to burst Sunday » and I had happiness to work with lights as Elodie STOP in a film on the generation which knew the front sex and after the AIDS. He tells the fact, that today, one is really obsessed by the sex because one is obliged to look at the others making while us one shakes. It is an oneiric fable which begin with a scene where Elodie makes a OD of ectas in a club to find itself with the mortuary. The character that I play at this time there is deformed a little because its relation with his wife is finished. It sees the corpse of this girl, it fall in love. It makes love with the corpse and the girl returns. And there starts a history on the désamour. This film will come out in autumn or winter.
With films approaching a gay set of themes, aren’t you afraid to harm your image?
I do not have an image. There is a majority of people who know only » Great Blue » and there is another small minority which were pleased to follow my course. With time, people will know me more. I like better to be mysterious that to have palms.
And your role in my captain?
Initially, the possibility of turning to Rome in Spring it is very beautiful. And I liked much this metaphor of the evil which must be constant, badly in term of bon/mal and male in term of mâle/femelle and this metaphor as for the homosexuality which is used. The mal/mâle must be there and it always will be there. It is a film for me which is rather American in the direction where it is between » Platoon » and » the Cage with Insane » but written by Arthur MILLER post-moralist. My dad is a soldier and when I telephoned to him, I said to him: » Oh! Putain dad, I am in a uniform, red beret, I am to kill » and it asks me what that tells, » and well I play a captain in the Italian army which at the end of film has hara-kiri gifts a court because it raped only one young person recru. » (silence). And I quickly changed subject… (laughter). In all cases, it was proud.
And your meeting with Annie Girardot in » Preference « ?
Annie Girardot is a monument for me, it does not need to hide behind a drawn mask, it is a heart and it is not afraid to show it, it suffered much but it is a gladiator.
As for Ophélie, do you think that it will have a long cinematographic career?
Ophélie was very young success and it cannot continue its commercial pursuits like that and to expect a satisfaction because it is a futile continuation. It is a girl intelligent, ambitious, nice and it has a superb bottom but it has mirrors which are posed in front of it and when you have that you do not see more anybody and you can lose yourself. but it there be a thing which be the core of all, the desire, and I believe that it know not still where himself place its desire. It is young, it could take two years, it would not be forgotten. It should discover the world without trying to impress Gala or Here. Ca creates a media monarchy which sometimes influence and can cause deaths.
How you projètes you in the future?
I do not know where I go. I know that I have a confidence. I can perhaps say actor. And I am well far from the dreams of my 20 years when I had decided to be an actor. I am really living a dream. What can you better ask? I take place and a woman who likes me and
it is what there is of more brilliant!
